Micro LED is emerging as a major display technology, using inorganic materials and ultra-precision manufacturing to set new standards for brightness, contrast and longevity. Industry data show the technology is moving from ultra-large commercial screens and AR microdisplays toward broader commercialization, though mass transfer and cost remain key constraints.
Micro LED's core advantage lies in its miniaturized pixel structure, typically 50 to 100 micrometers, and its use of inorganic gallium nitride. Unlike LCD and OLED, Micro LED provides self-emission at the pixel level and does not require a backlight unit or color filters, giving it advantages in power consumption and structural thickness.
| Performance metric | Micro LED | OLED | LCD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contrast ratio | 1,000,000:1 | 2,000,000:1 | 1,000:1 |
| Peak brightness | 4,000 nits | 2,500 nits | 1,000-2,000 nits |
| Color gamut (DCI-P3) | 95-110% | About 95% | 75-85% |
| Lifetime (brightness decay) | 100,000 hours (90%) | 50,000-80,000 hours (50%) | 50,000 hours |
Industry specifications indicate peak brightness of about 4,000 nits and a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, with a DCI-P3 color gamut of 95 to 110 percent. Laboratory data cited for lifetime show 100,000 hours with brightness at 90 percent, compared with 50,000 to 80,000 hours to 50 percent for OLED and about 50,000 hours for LCD.
The main bottleneck is mass transfer. Advanced robotic systems can now transfer more than 1 million chips per hour with placement accuracy within plus or minus 1 micrometer, a requirement for image clarity. Current production costs are estimated at $200 to $300 per square metre.
Costs are expected to fall as transfer throughput rises above 10 million chips per hour. Industry forecasts point to $50 to $80 per square metre by 2028, a shift that would be central to wider commercial adoption.
Micro LED applications are polarized between ultra-large commercial displays, including 292-inch televisions, and microdisplays for augmented reality glasses. In AR, a pixel density of 5,000 PPI and brightness of 10,000 nits are critical for maintaining visibility against strong ambient light.
Market estimates put global Micro LED revenue at $2.5 billion in 2024, rising to $20 billion by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of 45 percent. The outlook depends on progress in yield, transfer efficiency and cost reduction.
